Kunal Johar is the Co-Founder and CTO of Open Water Inc., a software platform that helps grow awards, abstracts, fellowships, grants, and more. Prior to his
Prior to his journey into entrepreneurship, Kunal worked as a computer scientist for the US Government. During his time at NATO, Kunal pioneered and successfully executed a first of its’ kind – fully virtual meeting between the U.S. and NATO nations connecting over 90+ individuals from 8 nations seamlessly. The platform was a virtualized meeting that integrated cutting edge and legacy technologies.
After leaving his positions with the government, Kunal taught at his alma mater, The George Washington University and had his own consulting business. Through his experiences in technology came the inception of Open Water, Inc. in 2014. Initially, OpenWater launched as an abstract management software company and then the pandemic hit.
Kunal made an executive decision to make a shift in response to the crisis. Where in person meetings were limited and international travel made it hard for gatherings of all sorts, Zoom became a household word becoming an international gateway for video communication. With Kunal’s leadership, OpenWater launched a Virtual Conference product based on the needs of association conferences with thousands of concurrent sessions that needed to take place, virtually.
As a pivot was appropriate given the global situation, it is quite fascinating to see Kunal’s experiences from NATO come full circle and be a huge technological problem solver in the conference space.
OpenWater was ranked at #2056 on the list of America’s best ‘Small’ Businesses!
